West Ham United FA Cup Background

West Ham United’s FA Cup legacy is built on moments of pride and resilience, with three memorable triumphs marking their history in the competition. Their first came in 1964, when they defeated Preston North End 3-2 in a classic final. That era, led by manager Ron Greenwood and players like Bobby Moore and Geoff Hurst, would define the club’s identity for decades.

Their second victory came in 1975 against Fulham, a match notable for being contested between two teams captained by England’s 1966 World Cup heroes — Bobby Moore (Fulham) and Billy Bonds (West Ham). The third came in 1980, when Trevor Brooking’s header sealed a 1-0 win over Arsenal, making West Ham the last team from outside the top flight to lift the trophy.

The club’s relationship with the FA Cup reflects its working-class roots and romantic underdog status. Even in years without silverware, West Ham supporters have treated cup runs with deep emotional significance.

Matchday Atmosphere

FA Cup fixtures at the London Stadium and previously at Upton Park are often charged with emotion and nostalgia. Fans value the tournament as a connection to the club’s golden era, creating a passionate backdrop for every tie.
